  1. Shallow Grave

From the recording Creoles Skies

Shallow Grave - Jeff Bostic/Johnny Ryan – Bassist and co-creator of Johnny & The Mongrels Jeff Bostic spearheaded the writing of Shallow Grave on a demo recording session back at Dockside Studio in Maurice, LA. Bostic and Johnny had always wanted to co-write and trade vocals on a track since their inception as band mates and Shallow Grave became that vehicle. Dealing with someone in your life that only thinks of themselves and constantly breaks your heart can chip away at your own sense of self. Writing this song was a way to combat those emotions and give the power back to its rightful owner.

- Jeff Bostic adds, “It encompasses the struggle of a partner knocking you down to the point that you don't even recognize yourself anymore. Hence the line "stranger to myself" and to the point of feeling covered up or "buried". May this song help anyone in a one-sided, abusive, or toxic relationship, break free of the chains and be free.”

Johnny replied, “One of the first times I saw Jeff perform before we met and eventually became friends, I was blown away by his soulfulness. I immediately pictured songs we'd write together and trade vocals on. Our voices blend really well together and it's really uplifting to create with Bostic! The moment of this song coming to life for me was a very magical day.”

Lyrics

I'm tired feeling this pain
Tired, of giving in
I remember when I used to know how to win
How to let it go yeah
Before you broke me down

I'm a stranger to myself
Buried in a shallow grave, tryin' to find my way out
Stranger to myself,
Buried in a shallow grave tryin' to find my way out

It could take a lifetime,
Oh to break these chains
I'll never let you take from me..
what still remains

I'm a stranger to myself
Buried in a shallow grave, tryin' to find my way out
Stranger to myself,
Buried in a shallow grave tryin' to find my way out

I'll never give up the fight (Johnny)
My heart knows what's right (Jeff)
I need to share the light (Johnny)
I gotta get back... to who I am (Jeff)

Sittin' with my brother on the bayou
Tryin' to wash your memory away
But you keep coming round, tryin' to get down
yeah, middle of the night,
tryin' to fix your frown
Why can't you see you make me

I'm a stranger to myself
Buried in a shallow grave, tryin' to find my way out
Stranger to myself,
Buried in a shallow grave tryin' to find my way out

I'm a stranger to myself
Buried in a shallow grave, tryin' to find my way out
Stranger to myself,
Buried in a shallow grave tryin' to find my way out
